2015 Social Responsibility Repor
Wynn Resorts is an international corporation that designs, develops and operates destination resorts. As a preeminent brand, we continuously strive to set the standard in the creation and cultivation of meaningful, strategic partnerships with diverse groups. These include nonprofi t and community-based service organizations, governmental entities and policymakers, cultural centers and schools and educational leaders within each of the communities in which we operate. Our goal, in alignment with our core values, is to significantly and positively impact the communities in which we operate. We do this through the engagement of our diverse employee family, active community partnerships, volunteerism and the leveraging of our business assets, both as a corporation and as an employee foundation.
Our Wynn Employee Family
THE WYNN COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY Building Partnerships through Supplier Diversity Part of our investment in our community includes partnerships with minority-owned and women-owned businesses (MWBE). With local chambers of commerce and key infl uencers, we identifi ed forums for the Wynn Purchasing Department to educate and mentor local MWBEs on certifi cation, best practices and the vendor application process. Our commitment is not merely philanthropic—the relationships we seek must provide value both to Wynn Resorts and to the minority and women-owned business enterprises. Diversity and Equal Opportunity Diversity and equal opportunity are woven throughout our culture. These values are at the center of our business and community relationships. We foster an environment where each individual’s ideas, contributions and goals are respected. Our newest US development, Wynn Boston Harbor in Everett, Massachusetts, is a prime example of how we integrate these values throughout our business.
SPOTLIGHT: Wynn Boston Harbor. A team of Wynn Boston Harbor volunteers spent a day painting and sprucing up The Kennedy Center in the Charlestown section of Boston. This local day care center serves 134 preschool-aged children of primarily low-income working parents and is funded through government grants and private donations.“It feels wonderful to brighten the morning for these kids,” said John Tocco, Wynn Boston Harbor Director of Community Relations. “The Kennedy Center makes an amazing impact, educating and feeding these children while allowing their parents to work a full day.” The event also served as a great team-building effort, connecting new co-workers in service to their community while reinforcing one of Wynn’s Core Values: Care About Everyone and Everything.
THE WYNN COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY. With a comprehensive, whole-community approach and a strong emphasis on building collaborative relationships, we understand the ever-evolving needs of our communities. Through stakeholder engagement, we have a greater effect on social issues that are material to our business and the community. These partnerships allow us to address today’s needs while identifying future demands and the resources required to drive positive change.
GOVERNMENT POLICYMAKERS. Wynn maintains strong relationships with elected and appointed offi cials who are responsible for oversight of our industry and the community’s interests. Wynn advocates on behalf of our employees and our company as a whole. Along with partners in the industry, Wynn links our success in community development to policy interests and public investments. We believe these efforts raise the quality of life and help provide a better future for Nevadans. Wynn hosts candidate forums and debates to educate employees on the issues that are pertinent to our industry and our community.
Innovation in Education. Founder, Chairman and CEO, Steve Wynn, has supported public education in Southern Nevada for more than 40 years. Wynn Resorts and the Wynn Employee Foundation continue that commitment today, providing support to local schools through monetary contributions and volunteer hours as well as coordinating the collective efforts of our nonprofi t partners.
SPOTLIGHT: ESL–Supporting Education from Within. For the third year, Wynn employees interested in learning English and those who wish to improve their communication skills have the opportunity to participate in a ten-week English as a Second Language (ESL) course at no cost. Using audio and video materials and class discussions, students develop their speaking skills, improve their reading comprehension and learn to express ideas effectively in a professional setting. In 2015, three ESL levels were created and eight classes were offered with 155 Wynn employees completing this course.
Vibrant Communities
Collaborative Partnerships–Habitat for Humanity & Veterans Village. This past year, Wynn’s engineering team exemplifi ed the commitment to community that permeates Wynn’s employee culture by collaborating with Habitat for Humanity during the company’s annual Make a Difference volunteer week. The large-scale renovation project focused on several neglected homes. More than 100 Wynn employees came together to complete a Brush with Kindness project, one of Habitat for Humanity’s initiatives to spruce up neighborhoods with new Habitat homes. The neighborhood is located in a long impoverished area of Henderson, a Las Vegas suburb. Six new homes had recently been built for families in need, but neighboring houses—built in the 1960’s—were in need of fresh paint, small repairs and cleaning. Volunteers also repainted a neighborhood church and pruned and removed invasive trees that were a safety hazard. Wynn’s growing relationship with Habitat for Humanity showcases the power of collaborative partnerships and allows Wynn’s engineering department volunteers to combine their passion for helping local veterans with their collective job skills. In addition, more than 1,500 volunteer hours were dedicated to Veterans Village to completely transform, inside and out, a veterans housing facility. Many of the 166 employees visited Veterans Village throughout October to prep walls, examine plumbing and take measurements in preparation for the project. New fl at screen televisions were mounted in each of the 125 resident rooms while fresh paint gave the buildings new life. Through dedication and determination, the Wynn volunteers fi nished ahead of schedule, allowing time to enjoy a barbeque at the facility with some of its residents.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
SPOTLIGHT: Green Our Planet. Wynn is proud to partner with Green Our Planet. Through innovative methods, they collaborate to infl uence systemic change through outdoor gardens in the Clark County School District (CCSD). Ciara Byrne, CEO explains, “We are not, however, simply building gardens. We are building a movement. We see Green Our Planet as a catalyst that creates positive change in communities by building gardens in schools where ideas and methods of teaching fl ourish and grow alongside the vegetables. In the CCSD, we operate 85 school gardens. We see the school district as a complex network with the schools as hubs and Green Our Planet as the link between the schools. We knit the network together by spreading the good ideas teachers have about teaching STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), healthy nutrition and conservation in the gardens so that the entire CCSD and surrounding communities are impacted. Our goal is to expand our program across Nevada and the United States.”
Arts, Culture and Civic Engagement We defi ne cultural enrichment as immersion in local life and culture. The greater Las Vegas Valley presents limitless opportunities and an abundance of engaged citizens with the common goal of strengthening our community and sharing our story with others. From the Discovery Children’s Museum and the Smith Center for Performing Arts to the Gay and Lesbian Center of Southern Nevada and Legal Aid of Southern Nevada, Wynn employees fi nd great satisfaction engaging with these and many other community involvement opportunities.Additionally, Wynn values the liberation that comes with being informed, involved citizens and encourages our employees to become civically active. Through onsite voter registration, candidate forums and citizenship classes, our employees have abundant opportunities to learn and become active in this essential part of our community.
SPOTLIGHT: Citizenship Class. In 2015, two no-cost citizenship classes were offered, benefi tting 60 employees. In partnership with the Uceda School, the twelve-week course prepares individuals for the United States citizenship test. Citizenship enables our employees to participate in our nation’s cultural, political and social institutions. A celebration ceremony is held to honor those who successfully complete the naturalization process.
WYNN EMPLOYEE FOUNDATION. The Wynn Resorts Limited Employee Foundation (“Wynn Employee Foundation”) was created to strengthen Wynn Resorts’ most valuable asset: its team members and to enrich our community. Employee-directed, employee-funded and enhanced by Wynn Resorts’ corporate charitable match programs, the Wynn Employee Foundation allocates donations and stimulates volunteerism. The foundation’s work is based on three directives crucial to our community: innovation in education, building a vibrant community and cultural enrichment.Late last year, the Wynn Employee Foundation began its collaboration with our local community leaving a lasting impact on organizations, causes and needs both large and small. Focusing on collaboration and collective impact, Wynn employees are inspired to give back and empowered to make a difference. By developing strategic partnerships, employees serve as advocates for key issues in our local community. In the future, The Foundation’s impact on our local community will broaden through the Foundation Community Grant Fund. Employee donations directed into this Fund will be granted to local nonprofi t organizations that directly impact our local community and fulfi ll our vision of improving today and building an exceptional tomorrow. An Employee Advisory Council will review grant applications and recommend grant awards to programs that address critical needs and build a stronger community.
EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERISM. Through the Wynn Employee Foundation, employees can volunteer for a particular cause, organization, group or even an individual in need. Volunteering is a powerful way to contribute toward creating and sustaining a healthy and vibrant community. From spending the afternoon with seniors at the Nevada Senior Services Center to “Walking the Plank” with Jack Sparrow at Make-A-Wish of Southern Nevada, every hour makes a difference.
